Tooth Fairy Trauma – Part II

February 25, 2011

Those of you who read my post earlier this week “Tooth Fairy Trauma” may be interested to hear the second half of the story that played out this evening. In my earlier post I omitted the fact that when The Tooth Fairy left Emma her money she wrote a note in reply to Emma’s note that said:

Thank you for the nice note Emma.  I took a quick look around while I was here and found your tooth under the table so I took it with me to add to my collection.  Here are a few dollars for you. Have a great day at school!

                                The Tooth Fairy

This seemed like a good idea at the time, because that way Emma wouldn’t be worried about her lost and lonely tooth. However, when I got home from work this evening I realized that maybe adding that information to the note wasn’t such a smart idea.  Emma met me at the door and told me that the tooth fairy must have found someone else’s tooth because she found her tooth in the dining room this afternoon.  She had already written a note back to the tooth fairy and taped her tooth to it so it wouldn’t get lost this time. Emma’s note said :

Dear Tooth Fairy,

I think you mistook someones tooth because this is my tooth

                               Emma

(she had also drawn an arrow pointing down to her tooth taped to the paper)

Emma didn’t seem too concerned or even accuse The Tooth Fairy of lying. She is the one who came up with the idea that The Tooth Fairy must have found someone else’s tooth and “mistook” it.  She also told me that although she was leaving her tooth under her pillow with a note she did not expect to get paid again since that wouldn’t be fair.  She just wanted to make sure to get her tooth to The Tooth Fairy so there wouldn’t be any confusion.  Ethan wasn’t so sure about her honesty and suggested that maybe he should leave the tooth under his pillow and see if The Tooth Fairy would leave him money.  Nice try Ethan!

totally cracks me up!!! LOL! 🙂 Your kids are awesome!

  2. Cari Lott Says:

Dora swallowed her first 2 teeth and by the 2nd one she was very upset that she did not have a tooth to put out for the tooth fairy. So, we too had her write a note to the tooth fairy. She got her money and the tooth fairy wrote back to her. The only problem with it was that she recognized my handwriting. Really??? What little child can recognize a parent’s handwriting??? I had a hard time getting around that one!

I have very much enjoyed ready your blog. I miss seeing you guys and it is nice to see how life is going for you all.

  3. That is adorable. You know, don’t you hate it when a parent’s quick thinking is undermined by a child’s tenacity?

    😉

    • It was funny because my husband had said “what if she finds her tooth?” and I told him I thought that was highly unlikely. Opps! As you can imagine he had to hold back a chuckle when she surprised us with the news that she had!

  4. B.C. Young Says:

I enjoyed this story. But you know what got me, it appears you have a daughter named Emma and a son named Ethan. I have two children, a son and daughter, and their names are Ethan and Emma. Awesome to find someone with the some taste as my wife and I when it comes to children’s names!

I love this story. It makes me smile 🙂 Thanks for sharing and may Emma spend her money wisely…

  6. How sweet! Emma seems like a smart girl, very honorable one, too. Congrats on being freshly pressed!

    • Thanks! I was so surprised to find out I was FP. Emma thought it was cool to see her picture on the WordPress page when I showed her and asked to read the story. I told her it was just about how the tooth fairy “mistook” someone else’s tooth and she seemed content with that explanation 🙂

  7. NC Matthews Says:

LOL! This reminds me of the first tooth that my oldest daughter lost. We are not really sure -what- happened to the tooth, only that it was in her mouth when she left for school that morning and after lunch it had disappeared. My daughter was, of course, worried that she wouldn’t get any money because her tooth was now officially “MIA.” We wrote a note to the toothfairy explaining what had happened to the tooth, and my daughter got a crisp new $1 bill. The toothfairy didn’t leave a note in reply, and my daughter didn’t ask questions. If she had wanted to know why the toothfairy didn’t leave a note, I would have told her that the toothfairy was so small that we wouldn’t be able to read the note any way!

    • LOL – very good point! I bet that would be some very tiny writing! 🙂

    • The Debt Collector Says:

Wow ! $1, when we were kids in England it was 6d (coin). Which would have been the equivalent of 8c!

But then that was in 1971!

Great time for kids, and the real feeling of growing up !

In the case of your daughter swallowing her “milk tooth” as we refer to them in the UK, I wonder whether her calcium level in the he blood stream went up temporarily?

  8. mmgoodsongs Says:

Well you have one honest girl on your hands. Good work with that one. Isn’t it just like a boy to push the envelope and just see what they can get away with. Having two of each myself, I love it when kids show more trust and honesty than most adults. I love the toothless grin! I have one of those in my house at the moment as well. Cherished days!

  9. didiwright Says:

Really nice post, I can completely relate to it. We went through the same when my daughter started to lose her teeth. Just like Ethan, she too thought that it would be a good idea to test the Tooth Fairy, but not by borrowing someone else’s tooth, but by wrapping up a little stone in nice paper and placing it under her pillow. Of, course, the Tooth Fairy came and left her a coin in place of the little parcel, not knowing what was inside! You can imagine how pleased my little girl was …

    Congratulations on being FP!

    Didi

  10. lol, love the note! I bet that makes parenting fun 🙂

  11. i hope my kids (should i ever have any) be as cool as yours

  20. Half the time we would mess up and forget about the whole thing at night and try to slip in during the day and hope the kids forgot to check when they woke up. One of my kids was convinced that there must be two fairies, one for night and one for day.

  21. nymphyest Says:

Its so funny how innocent little kids can be!!! Makes me wish I was one again

  22. this is so cute. i used to leave messages for the tooth fairy; my mum used to write back and told me the timer switch on the lamp was ‘mary the fairy’ turning the lights on for us!

  23. sarsm Says:

My son lost his tooth yesterday. But the tooth fairy still hasn’t been. I explained to him that because he was born in Scotland, he has a Scottish tooth fairy and it takes her a very long time to fly from Scotland to Germany because she’s so small.
There has been some concern mentioned as to how she would be able to carry the tooth all the way back to Scotland, with her being so small. I have explained about her magic bag. Which seemed to do the trick.

The innocent honesty of your child is adorable.

    • Those are great explanations – you are wonderful and thinking on your feet!:) I like the “magic bag” concept too … I’ll have to remember that for when my kids ask a question about how she can carry a tooth when she is so small 🙂 Thanks for the encouraging words and I’m glad you enjoyed the story!

  24. TweeCo Says:

such a lovely story. I like kids who has two missing teeth like Emma. This is one of the adorable moments of kids!

  25. Debbie Says:

How hilarious! At least she’s got her ethics in place. 🙂

  26. makingup3000 Says:

I remember once when my kid didn’t tell me she lost her tooth because she wanted to see if the tooth fairy was real or me. Luckily my other kid told me what she was doing. Besides being a parent we are a few “other things”.

  27. Very funny story, I’m loving it!

  28. i remember when my first tooth came out i started getting excited because it was my first tooth that fell out and i went outside to show my friends and some 1 knocked it out of my hand by accident and it fell down a drain.

I was so upset that day but i still got money

Recently my son lost a front tooth and got the going rate, £2. Worried about magical creatures going into his room while he was asleep, the money was instead left on the fireplace.
Not knowing about this, I happily scooped up the money on my way to work the next day, with a nice lunch in mind.
When he found out his dad had stolen tooth fairy money, I was in big trouble!
I have yet to hear the end of this.

  32. Evie Garone Says:

What a beautiful story and such an honest little girl. I believe that Emma is being raised properly and with ethics.

    • Thanks for the encouraging words. 🙂 As parents it is so hard to know if you are doing the right things and teaching your kids what they need to know and so times like this are great affirmations that maybe we are doing a pretty good job afterall 🙂

  34. jillfeyka Says:

    • Thanks for the encouraging words. You are so right about these moments … they make you feel like maybe your doing a better job than you thought at this whole mother thing. Somedays it’s hard to see that, but times like these come along just when you need that encouragement! 🙂

  47. Maria Says:

Emma is awesome. Thanks for bringing up such a great kid (kind, caring and smart) – she’ll be an asset to society for sure.

  48. CountryWomansLife Says:

That is great! It seems that although I try and remember to leave money from “the tooth fairy” there are the times I have to be creative about where she leaves the money LOL. I love the response and pen pal system that seems to be developing Ha ha.

    • Thanks – I’m glad you enjoyed the story and I’m glad we don’t have the only forgetful tooth fairy 😉 Creativity and quick thinking are essential for a mom, aren’t they? We always have to stay one step ahead ! 🙂

  49. That is so cute! Once the tooth fairy forgot to visit and at breakfast my son pointed it out. I thought I did a good job of thinking quickly and told him she didn’t get off work until 7 so maybe he should check again after breakfast.

  50. TK Says:

Love the story! My daughter doesn’t believe in the tooth fairy anymore so now she just walks up to me and says here’s my tooth, where’s my money? Needless to say, she’s down to a dollar a tooth.

    • Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed the story and thanks for visiting my blog. I have an older son that is the same way. When ever he says The Tooth Fairy or Santa he uses air quotes to let us know but still keep it a secret from his younger siblings.

  51. you have one smart and honorable daughter!
It reminds me of what happened with my daughter’s second tooth.
She lost it at a friends house (we were visiting after coming back from the dentist)…
we wrote the tooth fairy and she got her money..I forgot to tell my friend about that…
3 days later my friend passes by and gives my Jana her tooth in a little jewelry box! emagine the mess I was in

Congrats on being FP! A funny read. Kids, you gotta love’m. Have 6 of our own. I don’t know how many times the tooth fairy forgot! 🙂

  58. Lol! Loved this! It reminded me of my daughter way back when.
She lost a tooth and put it under her pillow. Her room was a huge mess and I was a little upset about this so I had the Toothfairy help me rectify the situation. The next morning, my daughter found her tooth and a note saying,

“Dear Jade- I tried to leave you money for your tooth but your room was too messy and I couldn’t land on the floor! Please clean your room today and I will bring your money tonight.
    Love,
    The Toothfairy
PS- Don’t hide everything under the bed or in the closet because I’ll check.” I changed my handwriting and added some glitter for effect!

She came running out of her room saying, ‘OMG! I have to clean my room or she won’t come back!’ Then ran around like a chicken without a head, cleaning like a a crazy person! LOL!

That night, The Toothfairy left her money and another note telling her that she did a great job on her room, she was glad that there were no toys shoved under the bed and it was nice to land on a clean floor!

  59. Cute story. Children are so precious. I have two young kids and the tooth fairy has visited us a couple of times.

What a fabulous story! My boys got/get long and exciting letters from their ‘warrior tooth fairies’ – who are always grateful to purchase teeth for their fairy castle building project! The youngest one still has baby teeth – and also a pile of baby teeth he hasn’t got around to sending off yet. Perhaps he can’t bear the thought of telling me something???

    Ellen Power

    • I’m glad you enjoyed the story and I enjoyed hearing about your families tooth fairy traditions too. I wonder when your youngest will finally send off the rest of his teeth to the warrior tooth fairies 🙂 What a fun tradition ! 🙂

  63. Ian Webster Says:

We think, as parents, we are in control.
Not likely. What a stunning couple of posts.
And well done on the Freshly Pressed thing.

  64. The Debt Collector Says:

When you think about what we tell our children it is little wonder they are paranoid by the age of 10:

The tooth fairy creeping in to thier bedroom whist they are asleep.

Father Christmas/Santa Clause also creeping in to their bedroom, whilst they are asleep, then creeping out again. But they must not wake up or make a noise or the fairy/Sanata will get cross.

Then in the next breath telling them that they must not talk to strangers, and if anyone approaches them whilst mom and dad are not with them; If someone they do not know knock on the door whilst you are out not to let that person in or open the door, it is astounding they turn out as well adjusted as they do!

    • yes, I’m sure it can be confusing to kids. I remember my brother was scared of Santa when he was little because the thought of a strange man coming down our chimney while we were all asleep was very frightening to him.

  65. halfwayto50 Says:

I don’t have kids of my own yet, but as a kindergarten teacher I can relate to funny teeth stories. The best story I have is when one of my students yelled, “Oh my gosh I lost my tooth but I don’t know where it went!” We looked everywhere for it. I was actually worried we WOULD find it. We never did, but I’m convinced he swallowed it! Thanks for sharing another great one!

  66. ellehc Says:

So cute posts..and i think its not true about tooth fairies.its only on the movie, and i have seen that movie before. For my entire life, I haven’t experienced about tooth fairy whose gonna take your tooth under your pillow and pay you money.

  67. Roda Says:

    Hi,
A little vignette from our daily lives. Memories are made of these.

    • Thanks ! I started writing these types of stories down so that when my children are grown I can re-tell them to them and their children. I was afraid it would be hard to remember them all and writing them down would be a neat way to capture these memories

  68. Kimberly C. Says:

That is too cute! That’s a positive sign that your daughter thinks so positively of others. 🙂

  69. What a terrific memory! The tooth fairy use to sometimes leave “coded” messages for our twins to figure out. Once they “broke” the code it usually told them they had a trip to the $0.99 bin or book sale. Kept them on their toes! Thank you for sharing this post.

  70. A very cute and touching story…having a nearly-7 year old son, I can relate…they are refreshingly honest. I hope they always stay that way!

  72. The Debt Collector Says:

I have to hand it to the child: 10/10 for trying !

She will go far in business when she older, I bet.

And don’t worry, I won’t act on her behalf if the Tooth Fairy doesn’t deliver payment on the next tooth. In any case, although I am a Debt Collector, I am based in England so it is a bit far to commute for a tooth !

    Love to you both !

  73. jessicaber Says:

We have not gotten to the tooth fairy part yet, but it is almost here. My son is 5. Your daughter is a cutie by the way.

  74. The Debt Collector Says:

    Brilliant counter-reply !

This child will go far; the fact that she corrected the “Tooth Fairy” at this stage shows imagination and logic at the same time.

What I would be interested to know is, that when the next decidious tooth comes to the end of its life in the jaw, whether she will put both in the correct place and claim a double bounty!.

I love that child to bits: treasure her. I just hope that when the hormones kick in they don’t kick you in the teeth as well !

    Love

    Chris R
