Saturdays

January 15, 2011

As I was woken up this morning by the sounds of my children running and shouting up and down the stairs I wondered what I wonder EVERY Saturday morning …. “Why is it that on school mornings I can’t drag them out of  bed with coaxing, threats or bribes, but on Saturdays they are up at 6:00 am with more energy than the Energizer Bunny?”  On school mornings I have to really work at convincing them to get their feet on the floor and start moving so they don’t miss the bus.  On Saturdays I have to work really hard at convincing them to be quiet so Mommy can sleep an extra 15 or 20 minutes.

I’m sure I was the same way at their age, but instead of jumping out of bed early to play Mario Kart on the Wii I was jumping out of bed to play Summer Games on our Commodore 64.  Instead of searching through all the Nickelodeon and Disney Channels on Direct TV to decide what show to watch,  I was making sure to get up in time so I didn’t miss the Smurfs or Scooby Doo.  Instead of playing with my DS or DSi I was playing with my stuffed animals and barbies.

I guess it’s no secret that Saturdays are way more fun than school days, but I would be thrilled for a Saturday where they slept in past 7:00 am.  If I could only convince them that “sleep is fun!”  Yeah, right … I don’t see that happening.  Sleep may be fun to adults but kids see it as some form of punishment.  It’s kinda like the fact that you never WANT to take a nap until you are too old to GET to take nap.

Ha ha, that will change soon enough! Just wait until they’re teenagers. My son used to be that 6 a.m. Energizer Bunny, but now we’re lucky if we see him by noon.
